TCC Wearables Workshop & University Challenge

Challenges are problem statements submitted by NASA, industry, start-ups, or other organizations who are actively developing wearable technology. Interested in submitting a challenge statement? Let us know!

Challenge statements will be released in January before  the April workshop. 

Challenge Sponsors are expected to meet periodically (virtually or in person) with the responding teams. Sponsors should supply reasonable background information and feedback to the teams during the project. Sponsors may optionally supply materials, funding, workspace, etc. Additionally, at least one representative from the sponsor's organization should attend the workshop in-person in Houston, TX. 

Undergraduate or graduate students actively enrolled degree-granting institutions are eligible to form a Challenge team. Teams may consist of up to six students. At least one team member should attend the workshop in-person in Houston, TX.

Challenge teams are expected to meet periodically (virtually or in person) with the Challenge Sponsor. Sponsor check-ins and the initial challenge statement should guide the team's solution. At the workshop, challenge teams will each have a 10 minute timeslot to present, followed by 5 minutes of Q&A. Additionally, there will be a Challenge Team Showcase  where you will have table space to set up a prototype or poster and mingle!

1. Identify a Team Leader. Your team leader can either be a student team member or (preferred) a faculty mentor.
2. Have your Team Leader contact the TCC to receive the full challenge details.
3. Decide what challenge your team will solve and let the TCC know as soon as possible. Deadline : February 16, 2025.
4. The TCC will confirm challenge assignments with both the team and the sponsor. Challenges are assigned on a rolling, first-come first-serve basis. 
5. Schedule a meeting with the Challenge Sponsor and begin problem-solving!
6. Bring your solution - be it a concept or a full-functioning prototype- to the workshop!

This will vary year to year depending on participation and sponsorship. At minimum, teams will receive written feedback on their presentation and design. In 2023, the "overall best design" team received a trophy and a chance to present their solution in front of a NASA contractor's engineering department. Check back for updates regarding the 2025 workshop. The greatest reward is the experience and connections gained throughout the challenge process!

Intellectual property (IP) remains with the original owner unless otherwise agreed upon by both the Challenge Team and Challenge Sponsor. The TCC does not dictate IP agreements but can assist in mediating these discussions. We hope that the WW&UC catalyzes mutually beneficial partnerships for years to come!
